The Internship in the West Bank (Refugees, Human Rights, Conflict & Media)

The Internship in the West Bank Program (Refugees, Human Rights, Conflict & Media) is an integrative program that aims to give you the opportunity to experience living in Palestine. In addition, you will learn the Arabic language, and help Palestinians by teaching English and improving their conversational skills.

Internship in the West Bank Program also includes getting to know the other aspects of Palestine, including the human rights situation in Palestine and the challenges of the Palestinian media. Moreover, you’ll be getting to know the Palestinian narrative of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through field visits/meetings targeting governmental and non-governmental institutions, as well as meeting with activists and field researchers.

The program will feature intensive Arabic language classes, totaling 8 hours per week, taught by one of our experienced instructors with many years of expertise. Additionally, the program will offer opportunities for you to support Palestinian refugees by teaching conversational English once or twice a week.

Where does the Program take place?

It takes place in the heart of Palestine, in the city of Hebron. Hebron, Al-Khalil in Arabic, is located in the southern part of the West Bank. It is 30 km (19 miles) south of Jerusalem. The population of Hebron is about 300,000 persons who reside in the city, and about another 500,000 who live in the surrounding villages.

How long can I participate in the program?

Our Interns can choose to participate in the program for a period of one to 12 weeks. Whatever length of time you choose, we will support you so that you have a great and unique experience at our center and in this wonderful city of Hebron.

Is there a specific day I need to start the program?

No, there is no requirement to begin the program on a specific day of the week. You have the flexibility to start whenever it suits you best, whether thatā€™s Saturday, Monday, Thursday, or any other day. The program is designed to accommodate your schedule, so you can choose a starting day that works best for your routine and preferences. Thereā€™s no set starting point or restriction on when you can begin.

Human Rights Situation in Palestine

The human rights situation in Palestine is marked by severe restrictions on movement, limited access to essential services, and widespread displacement. In Gaza, the blockade has created a humanitarian crisis, while in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, land confiscations and military operations continue to cause civilian suffering. Despite global calls for accountability, Palestinians face ongoing violations and uncertainty.

Media in Palestine

The media situation in Palestine is fraught with challenges, including censorship, restrictions on press freedom, and threats to journalists. Palestinian media outlets face frequent closures, equipment confiscations, and limitations on coverage, particularly in areas under Israeli control.

Journalists often encounter harassment, arrests, or violence while reporting, with several injured or killed during conflicts. In Gaza, restrictions imposed by both local authorities and external blockades further hinder independent journalism. Despite these obstacles, Palestinian journalists persist in documenting the realities on the ground, highlighting issues of human rights and social justice amid significant risks.

Israeli – Palestinian Conflict

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a long-standing and deeply complex dispute centered on territorial, political, and religious differences. At its core, the conflict involves competing nationalisms, with Palestinians seeking self-determination and the establishment of an independent state, while Israel asserts its right to security and control over the land it occupies.

The conflict has led to repeated cycles of violence, with key issues including borders, the status of Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees, and the recognition of Israel as a state. Efforts for peace have been hindered by mistrust, violence, and political divides, with both sides suffering significant loss and hardship. Despite international mediation, a lasting resolution remains elusive.

Law in Palestine

Palestine’s legal system combines Islamic, Ottoman, and British common law to address unique challenges posed by the ongoing conflict. The Palestinian Basic Law acts as a de facto constitution, outlining citizens’ rights and the structure of the government.

The legal system is comprised of three levels of courts: First Instance Courts for regular cases, Appeals Courts for reviewing decisions, and the Supreme Court for final appeals. Legal professionals, overseen by the Palestinian Bar Association, ensure justice is served. Despite ongoing political obstacles and limited resources, the legal system continues to evolve, offering hope for a more just future.

The Internship in the West Bank Aspects

  • Interns will visit various governmental and non-governmental organizations focused on Refugees, Human Rights, Law, Media, and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.
  • During these field trips, they will have the opportunity to meet activists and organizations, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of the situation in Palestine from these perspectives.

Through a collaborative approach, you can also encourage others visiting your platform to contribute their narratives, research, or reflections, amplifying diverse voices and creating a space for dialogue, advocacy, and education.

Live with a Palestinian Host Family

Staying with a Palestinian family is a unique opportunity. It helps you learn the language and understand the culture and daily life of your hosts. You’ll get a window into their traditions, values, and hospitality, which enriches your learning experience. It’s a chance to build connections and appreciate Palestinian life even more.

You’ll also visit local factories to understand the local economy and craftsmanship. This offers a comprehensive experience, helping you appreciate the culture and life in Hebron.

Cook Authentic Palestinian Dishes Together

In our program, you’ll have a culinary adventure. You’ll actively participate in preparing authentic Palestinian dishes. It’s a chance to learn and bond over cooking while enjoying the flavors of the region. This experience helps you connect with the community and create lasting memories.

Explore Beyond Hebron: Two Days Off Weekly

We understand the importance of exploring the region. That’s why we give you two days off each week to venture beyond Hebron. You can discover other enchanting places in Palestine, such as Bethlehem, Nablus, Ramallah, Jericho, and Jerusalem. We recommend arriving in Palestine one day prior to your selected start date to settle in and prepare for the experience. Additionally, you are welcome to stay an extra day after the program concludes to ensure a smooth and relaxed departure.

What visa do you need to intern in Palestine?

To intern in Palestine, obtaining an Israeli tourist visa allowing a stay of up to 3 months is necessary. Acquiring a internhsip visa directly in Palestine can be challenging.

Visa Requirements for Palestine

If you belong to a country with an exemption agreement with Israel, you can acquire a tourist visa upon arriving at either Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv) or the Allenby-King Hussein Bridge border crossing. Typically, citizens from countries like the United States and European nations are granted three-month visas upon arrival, valid for a 90-day period.

However, if your home country does not have an exemption agreement with Israel, it is essential to obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy or consulate in your home country before your visit. Itā€™s worth noting that Israel now issues visas on a separate card containing a barcode to avoid passport stamps, as some Arab countries do not accept Israeli passport stamps. Ensure to verify whether your native country participates in a visa exemption agreement.

What if your passport isnā€™t suitable for a tourist visa?

Regrettably, individuals from countries such as Pakistan and India must obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy in their respective countries if they wish to intern in Palestine. This process can be particularly challenging as Israel maintains control over all entry points. Consequently, securing a visa becomes a prerequisite even before initiating the application.

Is the West Bank safe for interning?

Yes, the West Bank is relatively safe for interning. Most incidents or conflicts occur in areas far from the main city centers where Go Palestine programs typically take place. Cities like Hebron, Bethlehem, and Ramallah, where most programs are hosted, generally maintain a stable and safe environment.

Interns often find the local community welcoming and supportive, which adds to the overall feeling of security. Nevertheless, we encourage participants to stay updated on local news and follow any guidance provided by their hosts to ensure their safety.

Is prior experience a requirement for Interning in Palestine?

Our emphasis is on creating a supportive environment that allows everyone to contribute, learn, and make a meaningful impact, regardless of their prior expertise.
