Tell us about yourself and what you did in Palestine.
Hi! My name is Sydney Gwidt and I am from Wisconsin in the United States. I stayed in Hebron for one month with a Palestinian host family and completed the intensive Arabic course at Go Palestine. I cannot even begin to describe my time here in Palestine, and how happy I am that I chose this experience. During my stay, I have traveled to Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jaffa, Ramallah, and of course, Hebron.
I have been invited to and attended weddings, other parties, and simple dinner and tea/coffee invitations. I have met so many lifelong friends, both from Palestine and other internationals at the center. I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the occupation and Palestinian daily life through visits to several organizations, museums, and refugee camps, along with massively improving my Arabic skills.
How would you describe Palestinian culture?
While Palestinian culture is very different from American culture, I felt very at home here in Hebron. People here are extremely generous and welcoming; constantly giving out invitations for tea, coffee, and food and often giving gifts as well. My host family was also extremely generous and kind and made me feel very at home.
Did you find Palestine safe?
One of the biggest concerns of people considering visiting Palestine is about safety. I can admit that this was also a concern of mine, but I felt completely safe here in Palestine for the entirety of my stay. The people at the center as well as my host family were always willing to help with accommodations and give any needed advice. I actually felt safer here in Hebron than in many large cities in America.
Do you recommend others to come to Palestine to join the Go Palestine family?
Overall, I definitely recommend people to visit Palestine and try one of the center’s programs. It is an experience of a lifetime, and you will meet so many lifelong friends, have an opportunity to better your Arabic, and learn so much about Palestinian culture, history, and the occupation.
