Learn Modern Standard Arabic in Palestine

The Learn Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) program in Palestine is one of the most important programs offered by the Palestinian Center to foreigners from different countries around the world who wish to learn and study Standard Arabic or the well-known modern Arabic language. The program aims to teach Modern Standard Arabic, which is the language of education, media, and journalism in the Arab world.

The program aims to provide the learner with the largest possible number of lessons and educational situations based on videos, and diverse and intensive educational activities; To be able to meet his educational needs.

The Learn Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) program in Palestine introduces the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), and the elements of language (sounds, vocabulary, and structures) in an integrative way. It also takes into account the linguistic, communicative, and cultural competencies, adopting the gradual method according to the level of the learner.

The fastest way to learn Arabic

The best option for those who want to learn Arabic as quickly as possible is to enroll in intensive classes. 4-6 hours of Arabic classes are included in intensive Arabic language programs each day, giving students more consistent exposure to the language and enabling them to learn more in a short time.

In just a few weeks, students at the Palestinian Center will accomplish great improvement in the Arabic language. With more frequent use of the language each day, students are able to internalize the information, which improves their linguistic skills and speeds up fluency.

When do MSA courses in Palestine take place?

The Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) courses in Palestine offer flexible scheduling, allowing students to determine their own start and end dates. Students coordinate directly with the Centerā€™s administration to arrange their schedules. These Arabic classes can be tailored to suit varying timeframes, with options ranging from one week to three months.

How does being in Palestine help you improve your Arabic?

In order to fully grasp a foreign language, one must spend time in a country immersed in it. You can only learn so much by sitting in a classroom and, in order to break the barrier of fluency and understanding of the language, one should seriously consider studying abroad.

Palestine, unlike many other popular studies abroad destinations for Arabic learners, has an extremely small ex-pat community and it is less common to hear English spoken in daily life. Thus, you will be forced to communicate and navigate the country while using Arabic.

Specifically, within Palestine, the Palestinian Center in Hebron gives you all the tools and opportunities you need to engage in the culture, become a part of the society, and develop close relationships with people in the city to maximize your learning experience and progression in Arabic.

Arabic Placement Test

Students who have a knowledge of Arabic or who have already studied Arabic will need to take an exam to assess their language skill abilities before deciding on the required level of study.

Two Types of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) Courses in Palestine:

1. Intensive MSA course (one on one)- 4 Hours / 5 Days a Week

  • This course includes five lessons per week, with each lesson lasting four hours, totaling 20 educational hours per week. Classes run from Sunday to Thursday, while Friday (the day of worship and rest) and Saturday are considered the weekend in Palestine.
  • The Intensive Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) course is perfect for learners who wish to study Arabic intensively over a short period. It is ideal for those aiming to maximize their language acquisition during their brief stay in Palestine.

2. Super Intensive MSA course (one on one) 6 Hours / 5 Days a Week

  • This course consists of five lessons per week, with each lesson lasting six hours, for a total of 30 educational hours per week. Classes are held from Sunday to Thursday, with Friday and Saturday serving as the weekend in Palestine.
  • The Super-Intensive Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) course is tailored for individuals who want to immerse themselves in Arabic language learning at an accelerated pace. This program is highly recommended for those seeking to make the most of their short stay in Palestine by achieving significant language progress.

Why you should study Arabic?

  • The Arabic language or the language of Daad is one of the most widespread languages ā€‹ā€‹within the group of Semitic languages, in the countries of the Arab world in addition to many other regions such as Turkey, Ahwaz, Mali, Chad, Senegal, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iran, and South Sudan.
  • The Arabic language represents an ancient Arab and Islamic culture and civilization, and it is a living, contemporary language that represents a wide segment of human societies that belong to a vital geographical area that is the focus of the world’s attention.
  • Given the increasing demand for Arabic language learning by non-native speakers, for various motives; Political, diplomatic, economic, religious, cultural, educational, touristic, communicative, and others and the Arab Libraryā€™s lack of quality programs concerned with teaching Arabic, the Palestinian Center for Education worked to build an integrated program for teaching Arabic to non-native speakers to achieve the beneficiariesā€™ goals in a distinctive, updated and unconventional educational style.

What are the differences between MSA and the Palestinian Arabic?

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA)

Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), or Fusā€™ha, is the formal and standardized form of the Arabic language used across the Arab world. It serves as the medium for written communication in literature, official documents, and media broadcasts such as news and formal speeches.

MSA adheres to strict grammatical rules and remains consistent regardless of regional variations, making it a unifying tool for communication among Arabic speakers from different countries. However, it is rarely spoken in daily life and is primarily learned through formal education. Its precise and structured nature makes it ideal for professional and academic contexts.

Levantine Arabic – Palestinian Ammiya

Palestinian Ammiya, a dialect of Levantine Arabic, is the spoken vernacular used in everyday communication in Palestine. Unlike MSA, Ammiya is informal and deeply rooted in local culture, reflecting the region’s unique history and influences from languages like Turkish, Hebrew, and English.

Its grammar is less rigid, and its vocabulary often diverges from MSA, making it more accessible for casual interactions. Palestinian Ammiya is highly dynamic, evolving through social and generational changes, and is learned naturally at home and within the community. While not used for formal writing or official purposes, it serves as the lifeblood of everyday conversation and cultural identity.

Individual Courses (One-on-One Classes)

Intensive language courses work best when students can engage in active discussions. At the Palestinian Center, we use one-on-one classes to allow more time for student participation and personalized attention from teachers. This approach helps create a supportive environment where students can practice their language skills and build confidence.

This approach focuses on using the language in real-life situations, helping students communicate effectively with native speakers and connect more deeply with Arabic language and culture. Through one-on-one classes and interactive conversations, students can improve their language skills, expand their vocabulary, and gain a better understanding of the language and culture.

The class continues uninterrupted until it breaks for breakfast at 9:30. During this brief pause, students have the opportunity to refresh themselves before diving into the next segment of their Arabic studies.

Breakfast starts at 9:30 am

The breakfast starts at 9:30 in the morning and ends at approximately 10:15. Our breakfast contains a number of ingredients, including Palestinian thyme (Zaatar), labneh, tomato, cucumber slices, falafel, hummus, mortadella, olives, yellow cheese, jam, pita bread, boiled or fried eggs, and French fries. The ingredients are changed (among the mentioned ingredients) from time to time to diversify the breakfast.

This one-hour session will provide you with an opportunity to dive deeper into the language, reinforcing the skills you’ve learned in the earlier classes. The class is designed to keep you engaged and help you make steady progress in your Arabic learning journey. These trips will give you the opportunity to learn about the conditions of the Palestinian refugees, talk to them and learn their stories. These trips depart at 10:45 am from the center and end approx. at 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon.

Local Visits to Learn about the Landmarks of the city of Hebron

What visa do you need to Study Arabic in Palestine?

To study Arabic in Palestine, obtaining an Israeli tourist visa allowing a stay of up to 3 months is necessary. Acquiring a volunteer visa directly in Palestine can be challenging.

Visa Requirements for Palestine

If you belong to a country with an exemption agreement with Israel, you can acquire a tourist visa upon arriving at either Ben Gurion Airport (Tel Aviv) or the Allenby-King Hussein Bridge border crossing. Typically, citizens from countries like the United States and European nations are granted three-month visas upon arrival, valid for a 90-day period.

However, if your home country does not have an exemption agreement with Israel, it is essential to obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy or consulate in your home country before your visit. Itā€™s worth noting that Israel now issues visas on a separate card containing a barcode to avoid passport stamps, as some Arab countries do not accept Israeli passport stamps. Ensure to verify whether your native country participates in a visa exemption agreement.

What if your passport isnā€™t suitable for a tourist visa?

Regrettably, individuals from countries such as Pakistan and India must obtain a visa from the Israeli embassy in their respective countries if they wish to volunteer in Palestine. This process can be particularly challenging as Israel maintains control over all entry points. Consequently, securing a visa becomes a prerequisite even before initiating the volunteer application.

Is the West Bank safe?

Yes, the West Bank is relatively safe. Most incidents or conflicts occur in areas far from the main city centers where Arabic programs typically take place. Cities like Hebron, Bethlehem, and Ramallah, where most volunteering programs are hosted, generally maintain a stable and safe environment.

Arabic students often find the local community welcoming and supportive, which adds to the overall feeling of security. Nevertheless, we encourage participants to stay updated on local news and follow any guidance provided by their hosts to ensure their safety.

Is prior knowledge of Arabic required to join the Arabic program?

No, prior knowledge of Arabic is not a requirement to join the Arabic program at Go Palestine. Our program is open to participants of all levels, from complete beginners with zero knowledge of Arabic to advanced learners looking to enhance their skills.

We offer a supportive and inclusive environment tailored to meet you at your current level, ensuring that you can learn, contribute, and grow effectively. Whether you’re just starting your journey with Arabic or seeking to refine your fluency, our program provides the resources and guidance you need to succeed. Join us and make a positive impact while deepening your connection to this remarkable region.

Is it possible to combine this program with another Program?

Yes, this program can be combined with one or more of the other internship or volunteer programs that the center offers. For example, you may choose one week or more to complete this program, and combine this with another week or more of another program.

Can I extend the term of my Program while I’m there?

Yes, participants are allowed to extend their participation period. In this case, you must inform the center coordinator at least one week before the end of the current program.
